Book Club: The future of the responsible company by Vincent Stanley
In this new book (hot of the press and in print in the UK from 19th October 23) Vincent Stanley, the Director of Patagonia Philosophy at Patagonia argues that every business has a responsibility to offer high-quality services/products, be useful, and do the right thing in the right way.
Co-authored by Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia’s founder, this is a distillation of what Chouinard and Stanley have learned over the last 50 years. The book gives practical and specific pointers to show how every business can limit harm, maximise quality and enjoy deeper meaning in their work.
It’s also worth a quick read of an interview Stanley did for Forbes magazine recently where he discusses recent changes to the Patagonia company and how he sees it evolving in the future.
This chimes well with another brand new publication, ‘You can’t make money from a dead planet‘, by Mark Shayler. Shayler has worked with a multitude of big and small companies and co-founded the Do Lectures. He explains that doing good is no longer a ‘nice to have’ in business, it’s a necessity. Shayler argues that being profitable and doing the right thing for customers can and should co-exist with doing the right thing for the planet.
We’ve added both books to our reading list!
